In the 1960’s, and 1970’s and lesser so in the 1980’s, the music industry was dominated by the music groups, particularly, rock and roll groups. Some popular artists back in the day were The Beatles, Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Jimi Hendrix, and Kiss, among many others. While some of the main bands and groups had their frontman or woman, the person who got most of the attention, all of these individuals in each of these bands couldn’t have made it to their level of fame without the support of one another in achieving the success that they had.
Early on, in hip hop, groups were very popular as well. Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan were some of the most popular music groups at the time, period. But as time progressed, individual hip hop artists became more popular and more common than the group themes. While there’s nothing wrong with honing your individual talents, it’s kind of cool to be able to have popular hip-hop groups. While it’s easy for the best artists to have their music appreciated, it becomes a little cooler when there are a few people in a group that people can relate to. With only one person to direct their attention to as a hip hop fan, it’s not as easy to relate to them as it would be if there were three or more people in the group. With more personalities in a group, there are more chances for someone to be able to relate to one of the individuals in a group. (more…)
Ever have a song come on in your playlist or randomly at some point during your listening and a rush of feelings and memories of past experiences come flooding in your head. The magic of music on your emotions is clear during these moments. Associating happy times, sad times, glad times, bad times all with a number of songs can truly have been a major influence on what you go through as a person.
When I met my wife, there was a radio station that we listened to regularly on our drives to dates, or just regular outings together. There were a few regular songs that come on the radio that I enjoyed listening too, but it wasn’t till after the fact when they became a somewhat rare occurrence when I realized the effect that had on me. The songs that played in the background of our life experiences were the ones that we played at our wedding. Now, when those same songs encounter us in our lives, they hold a history for us, and I get a rush of feelings that go through me each time I hear one of those songs come up on the radio or approach me at different stages in my life.
There are many avenues available when taking on a career in music. Some people’s passion for music is so high, that sometimes amazing careers are simply based on just playing the music of great artists through the speakers controlled by your computer. Some people would even pay highly for this so called “skill.”
In my family, it just so happened to work out that all three of my parent’s children find a career in the wedding business. I’m a wedding DJ, my brother is a wedding photographer in San Francisco, and my sister is a wedding planner. It hasn’t quite happened just yet where all three of us are able to work the same wedding, but we are hopeful. We of course try to plug one of our siblings whenever possible, and we have been able to work with each other before, just never at the same time yet.
The reason I got into being a wedding DJ is a funny story. It is one of overcoming being an introvert without a job, while never ceasing to live a life that I loved. (more…)
In this time period, discovering new music feels like what I can only imagine discovering new land felt like to the early explorers of the late middle ages. Most types and popular brands of music are in the mainstream by the time most people discover it, and finding out about an artist or musician before they hit the mainstream can feel great. Being one of the few fans of a musician can make your music tastes feel a little individualistic, and give you the chance to be the one to spread your new discoveries to your friends and get the credit for the find when they become your friends favorite artists too.
Finding a talented artist who stands out in the giant sea of popular music can be especially hard when you have to honestly judge their production and ability to create good music in comparison to the rest of the world. The musical talents of this generation are wide spread. Many people grew up with the chance to play musical instruments that the previous generations would have had no way of doing. Also, particularly in this time, there are tons of outlets for people to become inspired by artists and have the chance to listen or see them at the typing of a keyboard and the clicking of a mouse. It is incredibly easy to find new music, and once you do, it’s pretty easy to find tons of similar music related to your latest discoveries. In 2016, there are tons of ways to discover new music, share new music with your friends, and check out the latest videos, live performances, and interviews with our favorite artists and musicians.
In the early 2000’s there were websites that were just beginning to spring up where people could watch tons of collected content related to videos and music of different genres and niches. At the same time, people were also discovering new music through social forums where average and anonymous people could talk to one another in a practically unregulated fashion.
Following cd-players and other devices that allowed people to listen to music on the go, devices like the ipod became available for everyone. This allowed people to download music directly from their computer to their ipod. Ways of doing this were by buying music online to download, or importing a cd into the computer and then downloading to the computer. These were the two primarily legal ways of getting music onto a device that you can listen to without having to wait for it to come on the radio or have an internet connection to look up the song online. But, people started to figure out how to work around this. (more…)
